Hungary belongs to the US Visa Waiver Program, so a Hungarian passport holder visiting Manhattan for tourism or business can stay up to 90 days without a visa. An approved ESTA is still required before boarding. Apply only on the official site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov. Travelers who cannot use the program, for example after certain past travel or a past refusal, apply for a B-2 visitor visa instead.

What ESTA status means in practice

Hungary is in the US Visa Waiver Program, so Hungarian citizens traveling for tourism or business do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days. The condition is an approved ESTA, the Electronic System for Travel Authorization. It is not a visa. It is a travel permission linked to one passport, and it is checked by the airline before boarding a flight to New York.

The 90-day limit covers the whole visit, including any time spent outside the United States before returning home. A Customs and Border Protection officer at the airport makes the final decision on admission and on how long a traveler may stay, which can be shorter than 90 days. The program does not allow an extension or a change to another status once in the country.

Before you fly and airport arrival

Apply for the ESTA on the official site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov, well before the trip, and travel only once the approval is confirmed. Airlines check the authorization at check-in, and a passenger without one can be denied boarding. The application asks about past travel to certain countries, previous refusals and other background questions, and answers must be accurate. Save the approval number offline.

Flights from Hungary land at Kennedy, Newark or LaGuardia, and travelers clear Customs and Border Protection at the airport of arrival. Expect queues after a long flight. The officer may ask about the purpose of the trip, the intended stay and the return plan, so keep hotel details and a return ticket within reach in the carry-on bag. Answer briefly and factually.

Staying in Manhattan

A confirmed hotel booking in Manhattan, with an address and the dates of the stay, is useful at the border and at check-in. Travelers staying with friends or family can carry a short letter with that address instead. Book early for busy periods, since Manhattan fills up around holidays and major events, and confirm the cancellation terms before paying any deposit.

Getting into the city from the airports is straightforward. Kennedy has a rail link to a subway and commuter rail hub in Queens, Newark has a rail connection to Manhattan, and LaGuardia connects by local bus to the subway. Taxis and ride services wait at marked stands outside each terminal. Allow extra time on the first evening for the journey and for check-in.

Longer stays, work or study

The Visa Waiver Program covers short tourism and business trips only. Anyone planning to work, take up a paid job, study for a term or stay beyond 90 days needs a different visa category, applied for in advance at a US embassy or consulate. Business visitors on an ESTA may attend meetings and conferences but may not take employment in the United States.

Travelers who cannot use the program, for example after certain past travel or a past refusal, apply for a B-2 visitor visa instead. Applications take time, so start early. The rules and the categories change, and this page gives no legal advice. Check travel.state.gov for the current visa categories and the embassy or consulate in Budapest, or the nearest one, for interview booking.

How to apply for an ESTA

  1. Check that the passport is an e-passport with a chip, since the program requires an eligible passport for every traveler, including children.
  2. Apply on the official ESTA site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov, and avoid other websites that copy the form and add a service of their own.
  3. Answer the eligibility questions about past travel, previous refusals and background details accurately; a wrong answer can lead to a refused application.
  4. Pay online on the official site and check the current requirements there, since the process and the rules can change.
  5. Wait for the approval before booking or flying, then save the authorization number and keep it with the passport.
  6. Travel with the approved ESTA linked to the same passport; a replacement passport needs a new application.
  7. On arrival at Kennedy, LaGuardia or Newark, present the passport to Customs and Border Protection, who decide the length of admission.

Documents to carry

  • An eligible e-passport, valid for the whole trip; check the current validity rule on the official site.
  • The ESTA approval number, saved offline and printed, matching the passport in hand.
  • A hotel confirmation in Manhattan with the address and the dates of the stay.
  • A return or onward ticket and a short outline of the planned trip.
  • Travel insurance details and emergency contact numbers kept in the carry-on bag.

Hungarian citizens: questions

Do Hungarian citizens need a visa to visit Manhattan?

No visa is needed for a short holiday or business trip. Hungary is in the US Visa Waiver Program, so Hungarian citizens with an eligible passport can stay up to 90 days, provided an ESTA is approved before boarding. Apply on the official site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov. Travelers who cannot use the program need a B-2 visitor visa.

How long can Hungarian citizens stay in the United States on an ESTA?

Up to 90 days on one trip, for tourism or business. The Customs and Border Protection officer at the airport sets the actual length of admission, which can be shorter. The program allows no extension and no change to another status inside the country. Longer stays, work or study need a different visa category, checked on travel.state.gov.

Where should Hungarian citizens apply for an ESTA before flying to New York?

Only on the official US government site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov. Other websites copy the form, ask for the same details and add a service of their own, and some send incomplete applications. Enter the passport details exactly as printed. Apply well before the flight, wait for the approval and keep the authorization number, since airlines check it at check-in.

What can Hungarian citizens do if the ESTA is refused?

Apply for a B-2 visitor visa instead, at a US embassy or consulate, well before the planned trip. The application needs a form, a passport photo, supporting documents and an interview in most cases. Check travel.state.gov and the embassy site for the current steps and booking. A visa interview takes time, so avoid firm travel plans until the visa is issued.

Can Hungarian citizens work in Manhattan on an ESTA?

No. The Visa Waiver Program covers tourism and business visits, not employment or a course of study. A paid job, an internship or a term at a university needs a different visa category, applied for before travel. Check travel.state.gov and the embassy or consulate for the category that fits, and allow time for the application.
