ESTA (Visa Waiver Program)

Slovenia is in the US Visa Waiver Program: Slovenian citizens with an eligible passport need an approved ESTA, not a visa, for a visit of up to 90 days.

Status reviewed November 7, 2026 · sources: State Department, CBP · Apply on the official ESTA site ↗

Check the official site before you travel. imptmanhattan.com is a hotel and travel site; it does not issue visas or ESTAs and this is not legal advice. Rules change: confirm on esta.cbp.dhs.gov and travel.state.gov.

Slovenia belongs to the US Visa Waiver Program. Slovenian citizens holding an eligible e-passport may travel to the United States for tourism or business for up to 90 days without a visa. An approved ESTA is still required before boarding a flight to Manhattan or anywhere else in the country. Apply on the official site. Travelers who cannot use the program apply for a B-2 visitor visa instead.

What the status means in practice

Slovenia is a member of the US Visa Waiver Program, so a Slovenian passport holder planning a short holiday or business trip to Manhattan does not need a visa. The visit must stay within 90 days and serve permitted purposes such as tourism, family visits, business meetings or transit. The ESTA is separate and must be approved before boarding a flight.

The authorization is linked electronically to the passport, so nothing is stamped in advance. It covers short visits only. It does not permit paid work for a US employer or study toward a degree. Keep a printed copy of the approval reference with the travel documents in case a carrier asks for it at check-in in Slovenia or at a European connection.

Before you fly and airport arrival

Apply for the ESTA on the official site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov, once the trip is planned and before booking anything that cannot be changed. Have the e-passport at hand, answer the eligibility questions honestly and read every answer again before submitting. Approval often arrives quickly, but allow time for queries. Use only the government domain; commercial sites that copy the form charge extra and add nothing.

Flights from Europe land at JFK, Newark or, for some routes, LaGuardia. Expect queues at passport control and a short interview with a Customs and Border Protection officer. Answer questions about the purpose of the trip, the length of stay and where you will sleep. Have the return ticket and the hotel address ready. The officer decides how long you may stay, up to 90 days.

Staying in Manhattan

Hotels in Manhattan ask for a document and a card at check-in, and the ESTA approval is not a substitute for either. Carry a printed hotel confirmation that shows the address and the nights booked. Immigration officers may ask where you are staying, so keep the confirmation in the hand luggage rather than a checked bag. Names on the booking should match the passport.

From JFK and Newark, the AirTrain connects to the regional rail network; from LaGuardia, buses connect to the subway. Allow time for the journey with luggage, and check current service before setting out. Keep the return or onward booking somewhere accessible, since it can be requested at the airport and again at the hotel. A short first stay near a subway station makes the city easier to learn.

Longer stays, work or study

The Visa Waiver Program covers visits of up to 90 days for tourism and business. Anything longer, paid work for a US employer, a course of study or a family move needs a different visa category, such as a student or work visa. Those applications go through a US embassy or consulate and include an interview. Plan well ahead of the travel date.

Travelers who cannot use the Visa Waiver Program, for example after certain past travel or a past refusal, apply for a B-2 visitor visa at a US embassy or consulate. The same route applies when an ESTA is refused. Read the rules on travel.state.gov, which lists the conditions and the current procedures. The US embassy in Ljubljana handles applications from Slovenia.

How to apply for an ESTA

  1. Check that the passport is a chip e-passport, as the Visa Waiver Program requires, before any booking is made.
  2. Apply on the official ESTA site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov, with passport details exactly as printed.
  3. Answer the eligibility questions about citizenship, past travel and refused visas, and correct every mistake before sending.
  4. Pay on the same government site and avoid copycat pages, which charge more and cannot issue a valid authorization.
  5. Wait for the approval message, then save the authorization number with the travel documents.
  6. Fly to New York and present the passport at the Customs and Border Protection inspection, answering questions briefly.

Documents to carry

  • Passport that is a chip e-passport, valid for the whole trip
  • Printed ESTA approval reference kept in the hand luggage
  • Return or onward ticket showing departure from the United States
  • Hotel confirmation in Manhattan with the address and nights booked
  • Payment card and insurance details for the stay

Slovenian citizens: questions

Do Slovenian citizens need a visa for a short trip to Manhattan?

No. Slovenia is in the US Visa Waiver Program, so a Slovenian citizen with an eligible e-passport can travel for tourism or business for up to 90 days without a visa. An approved ESTA is required before boarding. Apply only on esta.cbp.dhs.gov.

How long can Slovenian citizens stay in the United States with an ESTA?

The program allows visits of up to 90 days for tourism and business. The Customs and Border Protection officer at the airport sets the admitted period, which cannot exceed that limit. Longer stays, work or study need a different visa category, arranged before travel through a US embassy or consulate.

Which website should Slovenian citizens use for the ESTA?

The official application is on esta.cbp.dhs.gov, run by US Customs and Border Protection. It asks for passport details, a contact address in the United States and eligibility questions. Pay on that site and keep the authorization number. Commercial pages copy the form, charge more and cannot issue a valid authorization.

What can a Slovenian citizen do if the ESTA is refused?

Apply for a B-2 visitor visa at a US embassy or consulate instead. That route involves an application, an interview and a decision by a consular officer, so start early. Read the conditions on travel.state.gov and confirm current procedures there, since rules and wait times change.

Can Slovenian citizens work in Manhattan under the Visa Waiver Program?

No. The program covers tourism, family visits, business meetings and transit. Paid employment for a US employer and study toward a degree need the appropriate work or student visa, applied for at a US embassy or consulate. Check travel.state.gov for the category that fits the plan.
