ESTA (Visa Waiver Program)

Spain is in the US Visa Waiver Program: Spanish citizens with an eligible passport need an approved ESTA, not a visa, for a visit of up to 90 days.

Check the official site before you travel. imptmanhattan.com is a hotel and travel site; it does not issue visas or ESTAs and this is not legal advice. Rules change: confirm on esta.cbp.dhs.gov and travel.state.gov.

Spain takes part in the US Visa Waiver Program, so most Spanish travelers do not need a visa for a tourist trip to Manhattan. Instead, an approved ESTA is required before boarding. Apply on the official site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov, and travel with the same passport used in the application. The permitted stay is up to 90 days. Travelers who cannot use the program apply for a B-2 visitor visa.

What the status means in practice

Spain is a member of the US Visa Waiver Program. That means a Spanish passport holder flying to New York for tourism, family visits or a short business trip does not apply for a visa at a consulate. The arrangement replaces the visa with an approved ESTA, an electronic authorization linked to the passport. Both are checked by the airline before boarding.

The permission covers a stay of up to 90 days. It does not extend beyond that limit and cannot be converted into a work or study status after arrival. Travelers who have been refused entry or a visa in the past, or who have traveled to certain countries listed on the official site, may not use the program and apply for a B-2 visitor visa instead.

Before you fly and on arrival

Apply for the ESTA on the official site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov, before booking travel, and keep the approval reference with the trip documents. The passport used must be an eligible e-passport, and it should be the same passport presented at check-in. An airline can refuse boarding when no approved authorization is on file, so confirm the status on the official site before leaving Spain.

Arrivals from Spain land at JFK, LaGuardia or Newark Liberty International. After the flight, Customs and Border Protection officers inspect the passport and ask about the purpose and length of the trip, the hotel, and the return ticket. Answer plainly, and keep the ESTA approval, the hotel booking confirmation and the return plans at hand, in carry-on luggage rather than a checked bag.

Staying in Manhattan

A hotel or host address in Manhattan is useful at the border, and officers may ask where the nights are spent. Keep a printed or offline copy of the reservation, since a phone may not connect immediately after landing. Plans for onward travel and the return flight matter as well, because the officer checks that the visit fits inside the permitted stay.

From the airport, the subway, commuter trains, buses and official airport taxis connect to Manhattan, and the choice depends on the terminal, the hour and the luggage. Check the current fare and the route before setting out. Newark Liberty sits in New Jersey, so allow extra time for the crossing into the city, and keep the return journey to the airport in mind on departure day.

Longer stays, work and study

The Visa Waiver Program suits short visits only. A semester abroad, an internship, a paid job or a move for family reasons needs a different visa category, and the application is made through a US embassy or consulate before travel. Arriving on an ESTA with the intention of working or enrolling in a course does not fit the rules of the program.

Students, temporary workers and exchange visitors each follow a separate route with its own paperwork, and some categories require a petition from a US sponsor before the consulate interview. Requirements and waiting patterns change, so read the current guidance on travel.state.gov and contact the nearest US embassy or consulate in Spain. This site does not issue visas or ESTAs and cannot advise on individual cases.

How to apply for an ESTA

  1. Check that the passport is an eligible e-passport and that it will still be the passport you carry on the trip.
  2. Apply on the official ESTA site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not through a commercial intermediary that charges for handling the form.
  3. Answer the eligibility questions about past travel, refusals and other details honestly, since the answers decide whether the program applies to the trip.
  4. Pay online on the official site and keep the receipt and application number with the travel documents.
  5. Wait for the approval before booking non-refundable travel, then check the status again shortly before departure.
  6. Fly to New York with the approved ESTA and the same passport used in the application.
  7. On arrival at JFK, LaGuardia or Newark, present the passport to Customs and Border Protection for inspection.

Documents to carry

  • An eligible e-passport, the same one used in the ESTA application
  • The ESTA approval reference, printed or saved offline
  • A hotel or host address in Manhattan with a booking confirmation
  • Return or onward travel documents showing the plan to leave within the permitted stay
  • Travel insurance details and emergency contacts kept with the passport

Spanish citizens: questions

Do Spanish citizens need a visa to visit Manhattan?

No visa is needed for a short tourist or business trip. Spain belongs to the US Visa Waiver Program, so Spanish citizens with an eligible e-passport travel with an approved ESTA instead, for stays of up to 90 days. Apply on the official site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov, before boarding. Check the current requirements there.

How long can Spanish citizens stay in the US on an ESTA?

The permitted stay is up to 90 days per visit under the Visa Waiver Program. The limit is fixed at the border and cannot be extended inside the country. A longer stay, a course of study or paid work needs a different visa category, applied for before travel through a US embassy or consulate in Spain.

Where should Spanish citizens apply for the ESTA before flying to New York?

Only the official site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov, handles the application. Other websites may look official and add charges, and the US government does not require their services. Complete the form, pay on the official site and wait for approval before departure. Check the status there again shortly before the flight, in case anything has changed.

What do Spanish citizens need to show at a New York airport?

Customs and Border Protection officers inspect the passport and ask about the purpose and length of the visit, the address in Manhattan and the return plans. Keep the ESTA approval, hotel confirmation and return ticket at hand. Officers decide admission at the border, and the permitted stay is recorded on arrival.

Can Spanish citizens who were refused a US visa still travel?

A past refusal, or certain earlier travel, can make a traveler ineligible for the Visa Waiver Program. In that case the route is a B-2 visitor visa, applied for at a US embassy or consulate in Spain well before the trip. Read the guidance on travel.state.gov and check the individual circumstances with the consulate.
