Sweden takes part in the US Visa Waiver Program. Swedish citizens holding an eligible passport can enter the United States for tourism or business for up to 90 days without a visa. An approved ESTA is required before boarding a flight to New York, applied for only on the official site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov. Travelers who cannot use the program apply for a B-2 visitor visa instead.

What the status means

Sweden belongs to the US Visa Waiver Program, so a Swedish passport holder planning a short trip to Manhattan does not apply for a visa at an embassy. The visit must be for tourism or business and end within 90 days. Instead of a visa, an approved ESTA linked to the passport is required. An airline can refuse boarding without it.

The ESTA is not a visa. It is a travel authorization that lets you reach a US port of entry, where a Customs and Border Protection officer decides on admission. The officer may admit you for less than 90 days. Business travel covers meetings and conferences, not paid work for a US employer. Apply ahead of the flight and keep the approval number with your documents.

Before you fly and on arrival

Apply on the official site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov, and answer the eligibility questions honestly. Past travel to certain countries, a previous refusal or an overstay can make you ineligible, and the B-2 visitor visa route applies instead. Check the official site for current rules before booking. Save the approval number and carry a printed copy to the airport. Airlines check it before boarding a flight to JFK, LaGuardia or Newark.

On arrival at a New York airport, travelers join the international arrivals line and speak with a Customs and Border Protection officer. Expect questions about the purpose of the trip, the length of the stay and where you will sleep. Fingerprints and a photograph are taken. Answer plainly and keep hotel details and return plans within reach. Then collect your bags and continue to ground transportation.

Staying in Manhattan

Bring a hotel confirmation showing an address in Manhattan for the nights of the stay. The officer may ask where you are staying and how the trip is funded. A return or onward ticket supports the plan to leave within 90 days. Keep these items in a carry-on bag rather than checked luggage, because inspection happens before baggage collection at New York airports.

Trains, buses, shuttles and taxis link JFK, LaGuardia and Newark with Manhattan; check the current fare and timetable with the operator. Immigration lines can be long at peak times, so leave room in the schedule. In the city, carry your passport or a copy as identification. Keep the ESTA approval number on your phone. For entry rules and transport changes, check the official sites and your airline.

Longer stays, work and study

The Visa Waiver Program covers short visits only. A stay beyond 90 days, paid employment with a US employer, a semester at a New York university or a move to the city needs a different visa category, such as a student or work visa. Those are applied for at a US embassy or consulate, usually in Sweden, before departure. The process involves forms, an interview and supporting documents.

A B-2 visitor visa is the alternative for tourism when the Visa Waiver Program is not available, for example after certain past travel or a past refusal. Rules and eligibility change, and only the official sites, esta.cbp.dhs.gov and travel.state.gov, give the current position. This guide does not issue visas or ESTAs and gives no legal advice. Book flights only after an approval is in hand.

How to apply for an ESTA

  1. Check that the Swedish passport is an e-passport and confirm on the official site that it qualifies for the program.
  2. Apply on the official ESTA site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov, and avoid lookalike sites that charge for the same form.
  3. Answer the eligibility questions about past travel, refusals and overstays truthfully, then submit the form.
  4. Pay online on the official site and keep the confirmation in your travel documents.
  5. Wait for the approval before booking or flying, then save the authorization number.
  6. Travel with the passport used in the application, plus hotel details and a return ticket.
  7. On arrival at JFK, LaGuardia or Newark, present yourself for inspection by Customs and Border Protection.

  • Printed or saved ESTA approval with the authorization number

Swedish citizens: questions

Do Swedish citizens need a visa to visit Manhattan?

No, for short tourism or business trips. Sweden is in the US Visa Waiver Program, so a Swedish citizen with an eligible passport can stay up to 90 days without a visa. An approved ESTA is still required before boarding. Travelers who cannot use the program apply for a B-2 visitor visa instead.

Where do Swedish citizens apply for an ESTA before flying to the United States?

Only on the official site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov. Other websites offer to submit the form for a higher charge and are not the government service. Complete the questions yourself, pay on the official page and keep the approval number. Check the official site for current requirements before you fly.

How long can Swedish citizens stay in Manhattan without a visa?

Up to 90 days under the Visa Waiver Program, for tourism or business. A Customs and Border Protection officer decides the actual length of admission on arrival, which can be shorter. Paid work for a US employer and study are not covered. For longer stays, a different visa category applies; check travel.state.gov.

Can Swedish citizens work or study in the United States under the Visa Waiver Program?

No. The program covers tourism, business meetings and conferences only. Paid employment, a semester at a New York university or a stay beyond 90 days needs another visa category, applied for at a US embassy or consulate before departure. Check travel.state.gov for the category that fits the plan.
