Switzerland belongs to the US Visa Waiver Program. Swiss citizens holding an eligible passport can visit New York for tourism or business for up to 90 days without a visa. An approved ESTA is required before boarding a flight to JFK, LaGuardia or Newark. Apply only on the official site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov. Travelers who cannot use the program apply for a B-2 visitor visa instead.

What the status means

Switzerland is a member of the US Visa Waiver Program. Swiss citizens with an eligible passport may visit the United States for tourism or business for up to 90 days without a visa. An approved ESTA is required before boarding, and the airline checks it at check-in. The ESTA is a travel authorization, not a visa, and it does not guarantee admission at the border.

The 90-day limit covers the whole trip, including any time spent outside Manhattan, and it cannot be extended from inside the United States. Swiss travelers who cannot use the program, for example after certain past travel or a past refusal, apply for a B-2 visitor visa at a US embassy or consulate instead. Approvals come only from US government agencies.

Before you fly and on arrival

Apply for the ESTA on the official site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov, well before booking flights or accommodation. Only applications submitted on that site are valid, and other websites are not official. Answer the eligibility questions about past travel, previous refusals and background details truthfully. Save the approval number. Rules and questions can change, so check the official site again shortly before departure and confirm your passport meets the current rule.

Flights from Switzerland land at JFK, LaGuardia or Newark, and all three airports have US Customs and Border Protection inspection areas. Expect queues at busy periods. The officer checks the passport and ESTA, asks about the purpose and length of the trip, and decides how long you may stay. Answer questions directly, and have the hotel address and return plans ready.

Staying in Manhattan

Hotels in Manhattan ask for a passport at check-in and record guest details. A printed or saved confirmation of the booking helps at the front desk and at the border. Choose accommodation near a subway station for easier movement around the borough, and keep a digital copy of the booking with the travel documents. Rooms fill early in peak seasons.

From JFK, LaGuardia or Newark, the trip into Midtown is by public transport, taxi or ride app, and it takes longer in traffic. Keep the return plan in mind: the 90-day limit counts from the day of entry, so a stay that runs close to the limit leaves little room for changes. Keep the booking reference for the return leg handy.

Longer stays, work or study

The Visa Waiver Program covers tourism, business meetings, conferences and transit. Anything else, including paid work, full-time study or stays beyond 90 days, needs a different visa category before departure. Applications for those categories go through a US embassy or consulate, and interviews are often part of the process. Start planning well ahead of the intended travel date.

Swiss travelers who are refused an ESTA, or who are not eligible for the program, apply for a B-2 visitor visa instead. The application is made at a US embassy or consulate in Switzerland, usually with an interview. Read the requirements on travel.state.gov first. This guide explains the trip itself, and it does not issue visas or give legal advice.

How to apply for an ESTA

  1. Check that your Swiss passport is an eligible e-passport and read the current rules on the official site.
  2. Apply for the ESTA on the official site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov, before booking flights, hotels or event tickets.
  3. Answer every eligibility question about past travel, refusals and background details honestly and completely.
  4. Complete the online payment on the official site and keep the receipt reference with your travel documents.
  5. Wait for the approval, save the authorization number, and check the status again before departure.

  7. Present the passport for inspection by US Customs and Border Protection and answer the officer's questions.

Swiss citizens: questions

Do Swiss citizens need a visa for a trip to Manhattan?

No visa is needed for tourism or business stays of up to 90 days, because Switzerland is in the US Visa Waiver Program. Swiss citizens must hold an approved ESTA before boarding a flight to JFK, LaGuardia or Newark. Apply on the official site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov. Anyone who cannot use the program applies for a B-2 visitor visa.

Which site should Swiss citizens use to apply for an ESTA?

Use only the official US government site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov. Other websites that offer ESTA applications are not official and are not connected to the US government. Read the questions carefully, answer them truthfully, and save the approval number. Check the official site again shortly before departure, because rules and questions can change.

How long can Swiss citizens stay in the United States without a visa?

Up to 90 days per trip under the Visa Waiver Program, for tourism or business. The limit covers the whole visit, including time spent outside New York, and it cannot be extended from inside the country. A longer stay, work or study needs a different visa category, arranged before travel through travel.state.gov.

What do Swiss citizens need at Customs and Border Protection in New York?

A valid Swiss e-passport, an approved ESTA linked to that passport, and the address of the first night's accommodation in Manhattan. The officer may ask about the purpose and length of the trip, the return flight and funds for the stay. Admission is decided at the border, and an ESTA approval alone does not guarantee entry.

Can Swiss citizens extend an ESTA stay in Manhattan beyond 90 days?

No. Admission under the Visa Waiver Program cannot be extended or changed to another status from inside the United States. A longer stay, work or study needs a different visa category, applied for at a US embassy or consulate before travel. Check travel.state.gov for the categories and the current requirements.
